FIRST AID AT WORK REQUALIFICATION (FAW)
COURSE OVERVIEW
The First Aid at Work requalification (FAWR) is a two day training course for First Aiders that require to renew their existing First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate for another three years.
For the purposes of the Health and Safety (first aid) regulations 1981, should your First Aid at Work certificate expire, you are no longer able to act as a First Aider in your workplace. If you wish to continue as a First Aider you will need to attend a two day First Aid at Work requalification course or, if you have not used your skills for a period of time you may prefer to attend a full three day First Aid at Work course. You will not be qualified until you have completed your requalification training.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) strongly recommends that you requalify within 28 days of your certificate expiring.
The course revisits all the subjects covered in the initial three day FAW course, giving Students the opportunity to refresh knowledge and skills they may not have used for some time, updating Students on any clinical changes that may have been introduced to medical intervention practices and making sure that persons providing First Aid are still capable to do so safely.
The regulations now also recommend First Aiders to attend and complete annual skills familirisation training inbetween qualifications, this may be especially useful if your team have not had to use the skills for lengthy periods of time.
The training covers a range of essential First Aid skills that are suitable for larger or higher hazard workplaces, such as construction, manufacturing and some healthcare settings.
Refreshing First Aid skills will equip individuals with the knowledge required to respond quickly and confidently if someone becomes unwell or is injured in the workplace. If your certificate has already expired, you should not act as a First Aider in your workplace until you have requalified.
It is recommended that if your certificate has expired by more than a month, you should consider a full three day First Aid at Work course to ensure you have sufficient time and opportunity to build your confidence and refresh your First Aid at Work skills fully.
The training carried out by EPS as an accredited organisation delivered by competent person(s) with suitable and sufficient knowledge and training along with practical medical intervention experience.
The course, a blend of theoretical and practical use of first aid equipment, allows course Students the knowledge and skills they need to handle a variety of work related emergencies including Basic life support (BLS) including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), management of an unresponsive casualty, use of an (automated external defibrillator (AED), dealing with choking, bleeding, cuts, bruises, burns, shock, and other common workplace injuries, understanding of the principles of first aid and the importance of recording accidents and incidents, recognition and management of poisoning, stings, and bites, recognition and management of concussion, fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains, understanding of the types of cardiac emergencies and how to recognize and manage them, recognition and management of seizures and epilepsy, diabetes and hypoglycemia, fainting, asthma and other respiratory emergencies. In addition, Students will learn practical skills such as bandaging, splinting, and immobilising an injured limb.
