FIRST AID AT WORK (FAW)

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide suitable first aid equipment, facilities and trained personnel so that medical assistance can be given to persons if they are injured or become ill at work.

Based upon a workplace assessment of First Aid and medical cover needs, the three day First Aid at Work (FAW) course covers comprehensive training for people to become a qualified First Aider at work.

FAW training enables a qualified First Aider to give advanced First Aid at work to someone who is injured or becomes ill whilst at work.

The training carried out by EPS as an accredited organisation delivered by competent person(s) with suitable and sufficient knowledge and training along with practical medical intervention experience.

The course, a blend of theoretical and practical use of first aid equipment, allows course Students the knowledge and skills they need to handle a variety of work related emergencies including Basic life support (BLS) including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), management of an unresponsive casualty, use of an (automated external defibrillator (AED), dealing with choking, bleeding, cuts, bruises, burns, shock, and other common workplace injuries, understanding of the principles of first aid and the importance of recording accidents and incidents, recognition and management of poisoning, stings, and bites, recognition and management of concussion, fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains, understanding of the types of cardiac emergencies and how to recognize and manage them, recognition and management of seizures and epilepsy, diabetes and hypoglycemia, fainting, asthma and other respiratory emergencies. In addition, Students will learn practical skills such as bandaging, splinting, and immobilising an injured limb.

Duration

Standard three day course, as per accreditation third party approved course and content.

Target Group

For employees that require the full First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification if the outcome of your First Aid risk assessment determines that you require First Aiders with more than Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) skills.

A high risk workplace would typically include construction, manufacturing and packaging, chemical industry, transportation and maintenance sectors would benefit from First Aid at Work (FAW) training.

Who Should Attend

Employees who have been nominated to be qualified as First Aiders within the workplace administering advanced First Aid at Work.

Course Assessments

Students must pass both theoretical and continual practical assessments throughout the course against specific criteria as set by the accreditation awarding authority.

TRAINING COMPONENTS & ELEMENTS

Element 1.
Medical intervention management / role of the first aider.
Element 2.
Casualty management and care / communication.
Element 3.
Types of cardiac emergencies, basic life support (BLS) including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) / management of an unresponsive casualty, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) / recovery position.
Element 4.
Treatment of adult Choking.
Element 5.
Treatment of wounds and bleeding.
Element 6.
Treatment of shock.
Element 7.
Treatment and management of burns and scalds.
Element 8.
Recognition and management of poisoning, stings, and bites.
Element 9.
Recognition and management of concussion, fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains.
Element 10.
Recognition and management of seizures and epilepsy.
Element 11.
Recognition and management of diabetes and hypoglycemia.
Element 12.
Recognition and management of asthma and other respiratory emergencies.
Element 13.
Recognition and management of fainting.
Element 14.
Bandaging, splinting, and immobilising an injured limb.

Pre Requisites

Nominated course students should:

  • Be proficient in the English language including reading, writing and numeracy.
  • Posses reasonable English language communication skills.
  • Students must be physically able to carry out the practical skills required to meet the assessment criteria.

Certification

Successful Students will receive a certificate of Completion as issued by the third party accreditation awarding authority.

The First Aid certificates that are issued under the accreditation awarding authority are recognised, acknowledged and accepted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
