HOT WORK STANDBY TRAINING

COURSE OVERVIEW

High hazard, commercial and manufacturing facilities undertake on going planned and unplanned maintenance as well as projects in order to sustain business operations.

Hot work is “any activity or process that generates flame, heat, or an incendiary spark, and introduces (or presents) a foreseeable risk of fire or explosion through a source of ignition by means of tools or equipment.” – GOV.UK

There are many kinds of industrial, maintenance and construction projects that involve Hot Work, which is a practice that can create significant Health & Safety hazards for employees and their workplace. In fact, it’s actually one of the biggest fire risks that employers, employees and property owners can face.

Over the course of the last decade, hot work fires have resulted in an estimated £68 million worth of losses in the UK.

Throughout this course, we explore the common kinds of Hot Work and the hazards associated with practising them. The course covers responsibilities for carrying out Hot Work and the hierarchy of control measures, including the key procedures for safety during welding, cutting and grinding.

All employers have a legal duty to provide all employees with appropriate fire safety training.

The training carried out by competent person(s) with suitable and sufficient knowledge along with practical fire safety experience. By undertaking Hot Work Standby training employees will be prepared in the event of fire, and be able to implement effective control measures should fire occur.

The course, a blend of theoretical and practical use of fire extinguishers, hose reels, fire blankets and firefighting equipment.

Duration

Standard four hour course, however can be customer specific fully dependant upon site operations and specified risks.

Target Group

This course is designed for personnel from diverse industry sectors including Commerce, industry, manufacturing, healthcare, pharmaceutical, chemical, petrochemical oil and gas, tank storage, nuclear, retail and construction.   

Who Should Attend

Employees who may be required to undertake Hot Work standby duties on site.   

Course Assessments

Students must pass a short assessment to complete the course against specific  criteria which can incorporate customer / site specific requirements.

TRAINING COMPONENTS & ELEMENTS

Element 1.
The principles of fire, common causes of workplace fires, and how fires spread through buildings.
Element 2.
Fire prevention and protection, detection and warning, means of escape, extinguishing fires, emergency arrangements and staff training.
Element 3.
Fire classification, types of firefighting equipment.
Element 4.
What to do if you discover a fire, what to do if you hear the alarm.
Element 5.
Practical training on control measures.
Element 6.
Specific workplace procedures and arrangements.

Pre Requisites

Nominated Students should be:

  • Trained and certificated in Fire Awareness.
  • Proficient in the English language including reading and writing.
  • Students must be physically able to carry out the practical skills required to meet the assessment criteria.

Certification

All Students that complete the course will receive a certificate of Completion.
