OXYGEN THERAPY ADMINISTRATION Training

COURSE OVERVIEW

This training enables users to administer oxygen safely and effectively, for casualties with breathing difficulties.

The administration of supplemental oxygen is an essential element of appropriate management for a wide range of clinical conditions, however oxygen is a medicine and therefore requires prescribing in all but emergency situations.

Failure to administer oxygen appropriately can result in serious harm to the patient. The safe implementation of oxygen therapy with appropriate monitoring is an integral component of the healthcare professional’s role, therefore approved and accredited training is required to be compliant with the appropriate medical guidelines and protocols.

The course, a blend of theoretical and practical use of oxygen administration equipment, allows course Students the knowledge and skills they need to administer oxygen to a casualty taking into account the safety concerns with carrying, storing and administering it.

The training carried out by EPS as an accredited organisation delivered by competent person(s) with suitable and sufficient knowledge and training along with practical medical intervention experience.

Duration

Standard one day course, as per accreditation third party approved course and content.

Target Group

This course is suitable for qualified First Aiders, Emergency First Aiders, dental practitioners and dental care professionals, nurses, healthcare professionals and others working in an environment where oxygen is available for casualty welfare and care.

Who Should Attend

Qualified First Aiders, Emergency First Aiders, dental practitioners and dental care professionals, nurses, healthcare professionals employees who require to administer oxygen therapy as part of their job requirements within the workplace.

Course Assessments

Students must pass both theoretical and continual practical assessments throughout the course against specific criteria as set by the accreditation awarding authority.

TRAINING COMPONENTS & ELEMENTS

Element 1.
Theory of oxygen therapy.
Element 2.
Hazards associated with the use, storage and handling of oxygen therapy equipment.
Element 3.
Operational checks in preparation for use of oxygen therapy equipment.
Element 4.
Patient management and care / Identify indications for the use of oxygen / contraindications prohibiting the use of oxygen / communication.
Element 5.
Administration of oxygen, Oxygen flow rates for non re-breather mask, bag valve and mask).
Element 6.
Administer oxygen to a patient in line with required guidelines and protocols.
Element 7.
Administer oxygen to a patient during CPR intervention.

Pre Requisites

Nominated course students should:

  • Be proficient in the English language including reading, writing and numeracy.
  • Posses reasonable English language communication skills.
  • Students must be physically able to carry out the practical skills required to meet the assessment criteria.
  • Possess a current First Aid at work (FAW) certificate or possess an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate.

Certification

Successful Students will receive a certificate of Completion as issued by the third party accreditation awarding authority.

The certificates that are issued under the accreditation awarding authority are recognised, acknowledged and accepted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
